
Why Interdisciplinary Thinking Matters In Technology And Healthcare
Some of the most difficult problems in technology and healthcare cannot be solved by one profession alone. A software engineer may understand how to build a system, while a healthcare professional understands the realities of patient care. A business leader considers cost, markets and sustainability; a security specialist considers privacy, access and risk. Each perspective is important, but none tells the whole story.
This is why I have come to value interdisciplinary thinking throughout my professional career.

The Problem With Working in Silos
**
Technology projects are sometimes designed primarily from a technical perspective, while healthcare initiatives can focus heavily on clinical requirements without giving enough attention to technology, business processes or long-term sustainability.
The result can be a solution that works in one area but creates problems somewhere else.
Consider a digital healthcare platform. Developers may deliver the required functionality, yet clinicians may find the workflow inconvenient. Management may discover that operating costs are difficult to sustain, while security teams identify risks that were not considered during development.
The technology may not be the problem. The problem may be that the right perspectives were not brought together early enough.

Different Professionals See Different Problems
**
A useful way to understand interdisciplinary work is to consider how different people approach the same challenge.
A clinician may ask, Will this improve patient care?
A technology professional may ask, Can we build and scale it securely?
A business leader may ask, Is it financially sustainable?
A patient may ask, Is it simple enough for me to use?
A regulator may ask, Does it meet the required standards?
These are not competing questions. They are different parts of the same question:
Can this solution work in the real world?
The World Health Organisation's Global Strategy on Digital Health 2020–2027 similarly emphasises connecting digital health initiatives with broader health-system objectives rather than treating technology as an isolated activity.

Digital Health Makes This Even More Important
**
Digital health sits at the intersection of healthcare delivery, software, data, cybersecurity, medical devices, regulation, business models and human behaviour.
That combination creates enormous opportunity, but it also creates complexity.
A technically impressive system can still fail if it does not fit clinical workflows. A useful healthcare product can struggle if its business model is unsustainable. A well-designed platform can face adoption problems if users were not adequately involved in its development.
This is why I believe digital health should be approached as a system rather than simply a technology project.

Interdisciplinary Does Not Mean Knowing Everything
**
Being interdisciplinary does not mean becoming an expert in every field.
For me, it means understanding the boundaries of my own expertise, asking the right questions and recognising when another perspective is needed.
A technology professional does not need to become a doctor to understand that clinical workflows matter. A healthcare professional does not need to become a software engineer to appreciate system architecture, cybersecurity or scalability.
What matters is the ability to bring those areas of expertise into the same conversation.

Better Questions Lead to Better Solutions
**
My experience across technology, healthcare, business development, operations and education has reinforced one principle: the quality of a solution often depends on the quality of the questions asked before it is developed.
Who is the solution for? What problem are we actually solving? What constraints exist? What could prevent adoption? Who will maintain the solution? What will it cost? How will we know whether it has achieved its intended outcome?
These questions move the conversation beyond Can we build it? towards the more important question:
Should we build it, and what would make it work?

Connecting the Dots
As technology becomes increasingly embedded in healthcare, the boundaries between professional disciplines will continue to overlap. Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, connected medical devices, health data and digital platforms are creating opportunities that require more than technical expertise alone.
My own approach has been shaped by working across these different areas. I have learned that the strongest solutions often emerge when technical knowledge, healthcare understanding, business thinking and human needs are considered together.
Interdisciplinary thinking is not about knowing everything. It is about knowing what needs to come together.
And in technology and healthcare, that ability to connect the dots can be the difference between a solution that simply works and one that actually makes a difference.
